Who they were
Born in Madrid in 1929, died in Rascafría in 2021. He entered the San Fernando academy in 1950, held his first non-figurative solo show in 1954, and in 1956 left for Paris on a grant; the following year he was one of the founders of El Paso, the group that put Spanish informalism into the international conversation. His painting from those years is matter itself: oil mixed with sand, whites, blacks and ochres. From 1962 red enters, then simplification and circles, and at the end of the seventies a period of white canvases. He lived in Montreal and New York before returning. Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts in 1998 —not the National Prize, which is often wrongly attributed to him— and a member of the San Fernando academy. Four houses in this directory handle his work.
