Who they were
The most internationally established Portuguese artist of his generation. He studied architecture and ended up in painting, film and installation, always circling the same subject: desire, transgression and what an image chooses not to show. His best-known paintings are fragmented female figures, barely drawn, across large white surfaces. He showed at Documenta in Kassel in 1982 and 1987, and represented Portugal at the 1997 Venice Biennale. He died in 2021.
