Who they were
A photographer, essayist and curator from Barcelona, he has built his work on a single idea carried to its end: a photograph proves nothing, and its authority as evidence is a cultural agreement. His series invent impossible herbaria, fauna discovered by a zoologist who never existed, and Soviet space missions erased from history, all documented with the formal rigour of an archive. He won the Spanish National Photography Prize in 1998 and the Hasselblad Award in 2013, the highest honour in the trade. His work has a firm market and numbered editions.
