Who they were
A Basque from Basauri, a founder of Equipo 57 in late-1950s Paris and a political prisoner in the sixties for his communist militancy. His best-known work hangs in no gallery: between 1982 and 1985 he painted the trunks of a pine wood at Kortezubi, inside the Urdaibai reserve, so that the figures only resolve when the visitor stands in the right place. The Oma Forest was vandalised repeatedly during the years of ETA’s harassment, which he denounced tirelessly. He died in 2023. On the market, his prints and easel painting are what is affordable.
